A bill was approved by California lawmakers, which gives the legal right to die to the terminally ill patients. The legislation is to allow patients with terminal illness to end their lives legally.

This was the second attempt to make the bill that succeeded after the case of Brittany Maynard that was publicized heavily. The 29-year-old women who suffered from brain cancer was moved to Oregon to take her life legally. The debate was watched by her relatives from the Senate floor with tears rolling down their eyes.

However, the future of the measure was not clear as Gov. Jerry Brown has not cleared his view on signing the measure. Gov. Jerry Brown was a former Jesuit seminarian

An emotional debate followed the approval of the bill by senators on a 23-14 vote on the legislative session’s final day.

Sen. Lois Wolk, a co-author of the bill, said, "Eliminate the needless pain and the long suffering of those who are dying.” According to opponents, premature suicides could be prompted by the bill.

Sen. Ted Gaines said, "I'm not going to push the old or the weak out of this world, and I think that could be the unintended consequence of this legislation.”

Requirements for revised measure

As per the revised measure, the requirements are physical incapability of the patients to take medication themselves, approval of two doctors, submission of many written requests from the patients, and presence of two witnesses.

Life-ending drugs can be prescribed by the doctors belonging to Vermont, Oregon, Washington, and Montana.
