Kamala Harris, who is considered as ''California's Hillary Clinton'' is moving ahead to become the first senator of India+Jamaican origin from California. She is having good support by the top leaders of Democrats.

Harris successfully overcome her first round of heavyweight challengers for the seat, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer.

Harris’ mother was from Southern India and her father was a Jamaican. President Barack Obama, and other top members have endorsed her. Harris is running for the seat vacated by Boxer, who announced her retirement earlier this year.

Still, Harris is taking nothing for granted. ''I always start my campaigns early, and I run hard,'' she told the New York Times, which ran a profile of her campaign this week. ''Maybe it comes from the rough-and-tumble world of San Francisco politics, where it's not even a contact sport -- it's a blood sport. This is how I am as a candidate. This is how I run campaigns.''

On the Republican side, Rocky Chavez (Hispanic), a former Marine colonel and two-term member of the State Assembly. But what would be surprising is a walkover for Harris in a state that is 40 per cent Latino.
