In order to boost the efficiency of workers, the Los Angeles City Council agreed t to draft an order for raising the pay of as many as 800,000 workers. The lawmakers announced on Tuesday that the $9 an hour wage will be raised to $15 by 2020. With this, Los Angeles becomes the largets city in nation to adopt a major minimum-wage hike.

Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco are some to have approved similar raise.

With Mayor Eric Garcetti promising to sign the wage increase into law, the first wage boost of $10.50 per hour will come to effect in July 2016.

Maria Elena Durazo, former head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor said the raise will encourage similar increase in other parts of the country.

“Without a doubt, it was a very big victory,” said Durazo.

While this raise has been said to boost the workers effectiveness, but few of the labor leaders have expressed dissatisfaction over the time period set for this raise.

Ruben Gonzalez, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce’s Senior Vice-President has predicted the other side of this raise stating the lay-off of the workers or workers opting to move to a new city.
