All About The Greatest Indian Engineer Sir Visvesvaraya

The entire nation celebrates September 15th as Engineers Day marking the birth anniversary of the country's illustrious engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The day is observed to pay homage for the greatest Engineer who is the recipient of the prestigious Bharat Ratna award. He is popularly known as Sir MV Visvesvaraya and he was born on September 15th, 1861 in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka in a Telugu family. He was a Civil Engineer and served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from the years 1912 till 1919. He also worked as the primary architect for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagar dam across the Kaveri River in Mandya, Karnataka.

Visvesvaraya was an optimist who led a simple life and thought deeply. He attended high school in Banglore and he completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1881. He then completed his engineering at the Prestigious College of Engineering in Pune. He first started his career in 1884 in Mumbai Public Works Department as an assistant engineer. He soon joined the Indian Irrigation Comission. Visvesvaraya designed and built the automated gates at Lake Fife Storage Reservoir. He was the one who created a novel irrigation system which is called as the Block System. He came up with a good solution for the Visakhapatnam Port when it was in danger.

Visvesvaraya was also the Special Consulting Engineer for Hyderabad city when it was in floods during 1900s. The government of India sent him to Aden to study about the drainage systems and water supply so that they can be implemented in India. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Government Engineering College in Bangalore in 1917 which was later renamed as Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. He received many doctoral degrees from eight Indian universities. For his achievements and contribution for the country, September 15th is celebrated as Engineer's Day. Apart from India, it is also celebrated by Sri Lanka and Tanzania. He was awarded with Bharat Ratna in 1955.
